LAURA E. SPEIR, PARTNER IN CHARGE OF CONTROLLERSHIP AND ACCOUNTING SERVICES

Not many people can claim a senior class of 22 students, but graduating from high school in Camden, Alabama certainly makes that possible; just ask WBL Partner, Laura Speir. “I never felt like coming from a small town placed any restrictions on me,” says Laura. "In fact, being in Camden with only one CPA firm actually inspired me to learn more about the profession.” Ultimately the same firm that sparked Laura’s interest in the profession, Andrew C. Bearden, Jr. CPA, developed an interest in her collegiate career and offered her a position after graduation. “There’s nothing like the familiarity of a small home town. I really enjoyed working there for three years after college because I felt as though I was making a contribution and helping the people in the community. However, it was always understood that I would eventually make my way to Atlanta.”

Arriving in Atlanta, Laura began her career at WBL, ultimately working her way to a partnership. Says Laura, “I was able to develop a practice in computer consulting and controllership services rather than focusing on the auditing or tax side. It’s been a great passion for me and a benefit that has been an asset to our clients.”

Laura is the Partner in Charge of Controllership and Accounting Services, and has managed this division of the firm since 1986. In addition, she has managed numerous consulting engagements with regard to computer hardware and software selections, the installation of software and the training of the personnel of clients. She has experience in a variety of industries including healthcare, manufacturing, software development, distribution, real estate and service companies.

“There weren’t many women in the profession when I started this journey, but it never occurred to me that I couldn’t pursue this business and advance my career to whatever level I wanted to achieve,” says Laura. “We’re developing a mentorship program at the firm for students considering accounting as a career. Our goal is to share knowledge of the intrinsic rewards and benefits of this profession.”

Laura enjoys collecting antiques, as well as preparing unique recipes from the herbs, fruits and vegetables she and her partner Clare grow in their garden. They’re also involved in various community pet rescue organizations and stay busy with three dogs, two cats and fish.
